Personal Micro Mobility
Segways, e-scooters, powered unicycles and hover boards are popular as toys and for hobby activities. They have the potential to provide low-carbon personal transport (as is common elsewhere in Europe) but currently cannot be used legally on public highways or pavements in mainland UK. Many local authorities are expressing interest in them but often have safety concerns. Their use is discussed in the ‘Future of Mobility’ report and the DfT has gathered evidence to review the UK position.
We have recently undertaken research into the types of device available, measures that can be taken to reduce the risks to pedestrians and other road users and how they are licenced and used in other countries.
