Bus Usage Trends in Sheffield

Our Customer

The South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE). SYPTE is the driving force behind public transport across South Yorkshire. It is the local government body responsible for public transport in the Sheffield City Region, accountable to the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority.

What we were asked

We were commissioned by SYPTE to investigate trends in bus patronage in Sheffield. All the major bus operators supplied us with summarised ETM data from which we were able to examine the changes in total numbers of passengers and the types of ticket purchased. We looked at the patterns of change in the peak and off-peak Monday to Friday and on Saturdays and Sundays.

What we did

Our analysis compared changes in patronage with the timing of fares increases and noted the effects of adverse weather. Other bus-based factors included the calculation of the reduction of average speed across the network due to increased congestion and the effect of the reduction in services supported by SYPTE as a result of decreased budgets.

We looked at relevant demographics including total population; car ownership; no-car households; the changes in student numbers at both universities; footfall in the city centre and trends in full and part-time employment.

The data for Sheffield was benchmarked with comparable Metropolitan areas.
