Grey Fleet
All public sector bodies rely to a greater or lesser extent on employees using their own cars to travel to appointments, meetings, courses etc. and, as more employees are home based, the need to use their own cars increases, with financial and environmental impacts. Whilst reimbursement rates are usually clearly defined, the types of use and management oversight procedures often are not and rarely is the cost of employees travelling time taken into account.
Evidence shows that there is a tipping point where it is more cost effective for an organisation to provide shared-use pool cars and promote the use of public transport, than to allow unfettered use of low-occupancy, employee owned cars.
We are often asked to take a holistic view of employee travel arrangements and recommend and help to implement changes which reflect environmental as well as financial concerns.
Another potential area for financial savings and environmental improvement is the use of vans to move goods and equipment. Should they be operated in-house or contracted out? Can journeys be combined or avoided to reduce mileage and driver costs? What are the implications of converting a fleet to electric vehicles?
