Belfast Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Review (2013)
As part of our role as Strategic Adviser to Translink (Northern Ireland), we were asked in late 2013 to prepare to undertake a risk assessment of the operational and commercial impact of the proposed Belfast Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme on the Belfast ‘Metro’ network.
The BRT scheme currently consists of three proposed routes on two key corridors: Upper Newtownwards Road and Falls Road, linking East and West Belfast. The third route serves the Titanic Quarter – a regeneration site around Belfast’s docklands. The operation of high frequency routes with dedicated vehicles means that existing public transport along the BRT corridors (including ‘Metro’ bus services and taxi services) require a degree of reorganisation to feed into the BRT network.
TAS is assisting Translink (NI) as operator of the ‘Metro’ bus network to risk assess the proposals and the potential abstraction – both in terms of revenue and patronage – from the local bus network. Our study, due to be completed in late 2014, will aim to provide our client with a set of financially and operationally sustainable options that complement BRT services whilst at the same time provide integrated travel opportunities for residents and others using the services. This will include the design of a supporting ‘Metro’ network with potential route schedules.
